Your camper can't wait to hit the road again. So climb behind the wheel and discover Friesland along its culinary camper route. Five simple, easy recipes take you on a journey past 12 regional shops and farm stores. Along the way you'll pass even more highlights that, now you're here anyway, you'll want to see. Let's go!
On to the first kilometres through Fryslân, where your camper trip starts in Menaam, an old terp village now known for its delicious potatoes. Here you visit De Boerderijwinkel Dykstra State, with a wide range of regional products: from meat and honey to locally produced beers and soaps, you'll find it all. For the first dish, French toast, you pick up milk, eggs and cinnamon here.
Your next stop is the Eleven Cities town of Franeker, where you can enjoy a stroll through town that takes you past the Eise Eisinga Planetarium, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2023. But above all, don't forget to drop by Banketbakkerij Schaafsma for the best sugar bread in Friesland. And to top it off, you pick up seasonal fruit from Groenten en Fruit van Bauke. Now that you have all the ingredients, you can park your camper for a delicious breakfast or snack of sugar bread French toast.
The second leg of the route brings you to Achlum. Here you'll find KLAFA Chocola, a family business that has been making artisan chocolate since 1997. These days they even have a 'chocomaat': a self-service machine full of different chocolates for your snack board, chocolate-covered peanut clusters for example. After that you travel on to Witmarsum, where you can pick up fresh bread at Mevrouw de Molenaar, because what is a snack board without lovely fresh bread?
Workum is your final culinary stop for today. This lively Eleven Cities town offers the culture lover the Jopie Huisman Museum and, of course, one of the 11fountains fountains. In this town you pick up the last ingredients for your snack board at Versmarkt De 3 Ambachten: Frisian cheese, sausage, beer and artisan chutneys and dips from the region.
In Balk, a charming and picturesque village with historic canals, you pick up the main ingredient for the next recipe: a delicious fish salad. At De Vismand, one of the few fishmongers open all year round, you'll score home-smoked salmon. From Balk your camper sends you on to Sondel, a small village in the South Frisian countryside. In the middle of the wide-open fields you'll find De Graasboerderij, a farm shop with organic products from the area. This rural paradise offers everything you need for your camper kitchen, including potatoes, apples and mustard for your fish salad.
In Rotstergaast, a tiny village with fewer than 200 inhabitants, you'll find Boer Bart: a play farm, farm shop and restaurant all in one. Do you happen to pass Boer Bart on a Thursday? Then you can join 'Ite by de Boer', which is Frisian for eating at the farmer's. Take a seat and be served several local and organic courses. Whether you stay to eat or not, at Boer Bart you pick up the first groceries for the shakshuka, the fourth dish on this culinary camper route.
After that you drive on to the watersports village of Akkrum, set between two lakes, the Sneekermeer near Sneek and the Pikmeer near Grou. In Akkrum, don't skip butcher Spijkerman. This family business is praised for its meat products, and its speciality, dry sausage, is the perfect addition to the shakshuka, giving the Arabian dish a Frisian twist.
Just outside the village of Munnekezijl you visit BakkerBio as one of the last stops for fresh vegetables straight from the land. For the final dish, a delicious hotchpotch, you'll need leek. If you spend the night nearby, the neighbouring Lauwersmeer National Park offers a breathtaking view of the starry sky at night. Since 2016 this park has officially been allowed to carry the title Dark Sky Park. The intense darkness gives you such a good view of the stars that you can even see the Milky Way. The route then ends in Ternaard, where you can pick up fresh potatoes for your hotchpotch day and night at Fokke de Jong's potato machine.
