Let's start with a quick geography lesson. Andalusia is the second largest region in Spain. With no less than 8 provinces, Andalusia is incredibly diverse. From the ever-popular Costa del Sol to the rugged landscapes of the Tabernas Desert or the Sierra Nevada, where you can even ski in winter. And don't forget the many cultural cities like Seville, Córdoba, and Granada. What's even cooler? You can easily explore all these places with your motorhome. Many cities, and especially smaller villages, offer free motorhome sites where you can stay overnight, get free water, and dispose of grey and black water.
Each province and its capital are definitely worth visiting, whether for a day trip or a few days. There is often a motorhome site nearby, good public transport connections, or a cycling paths available.
Of course, you can't miss Europe's only desert: the Tabernas Desert. Here, the landscape is so rugged that it feels like you're on another planet. And what about the city of Almería? Visit the cathedral, the Alcazaba, or one of the many museums. The natural park Cabo de Gata is beloved by many, and for good reasons. It's breathtakingly beautiful here, with some delightful motorhome sites and campsites in the area. Looking for lively boulevards and bustling beaches? Particularly in spring, summer, and autumn, Mojacar Playa is vibrant. On summer evenings, you can enjoy live music in the numerous beachfront cafes.
When you say Granada... You say? Exactly, Alhambra! Not just the beer, which you can get all over Spain, but the Alhambra itself. But also the historic city center and of course the nature in Sierra Nevada National Park cannot be missed when you're in Granada. For adventurous motorhomers, Granada offers plenty to do. You can go canyoning, climb to the top of Pico Veleta, and hike through the mountains on narrow rope bridges. Or how about skiing for a few days and then relaxing back on the coast in the sun?
This city offers the perfect blend of urban and beach life. Whether it's winter to escape the city crowds at the beach or summer for the opposite, Malaga has it all! An absolute must-see is the Christmas light show in December. Additionally, don't miss the botanical gardens and the market hall in the city. Outside the city, you'll find beautiful reservoirs and the famous Caminito del Rey. Further west of the capital is Júzcar, the blue Smurf village, perfect to combine with a visit to Ronda.
A province stretching from the southernmost point at Tarifa to the capital, Cadiz. If you love wind and water sports, stick around Tarifa, Barbate, and Conil de la Frontera. How about a trip to Gibraltar? It's easily accessible from here and great for a day out. Leave the motorhome in Spain and cross the border on foot or by bike. For Spain's oldest outdoor market, head to the center of Cadiz city, especially around happy hour. Around the market hall, you'll find plenty of eateries serving the tastiest vermouth. And in Jerez de la Frontera? Don't miss a guided tour with a tasting at one of the many sherry bodegas.
Regardless of your beliefs, once you're in Huelva, you can't miss a visit to El Rocio. Go early on a Saturday or Sunday morning and immerse yourself in this western-style town with nothing but sandy roads. Everyone is dressed in traditional attire and travels by horse and carriage, and you can visit the church and ask for the blessing of the Holy Virgin Mary. Balance the bustling atmosphere of El Rocio with a visit to the Doñana Nature Park. If you're here in the right season, birdwatching here is a delight, especially near the border with Portugal. In Isla Cristina, there is a nature reserve where you can spot flamingos and then enjoy some delicious food at a chiringuito on the promenade.
Absolutely not recommended to drive inland during the summer unless you enjoy sweating profusely in the heat. For those brave enough or visiting in another season, you must visit Seville. The city offers counless must-see attractions, so plan to spend at least 3 days exploring. Nearby is Santiponce, where you can admire the archaeological remains from the Roman era dating back to around 1750. And what about Écija? This 'city of towers' is located on the border of the province of Cordoba. Here, you can visit numerous churches and climb the 11 towers for stunning views. You'll also find a beautiful Vias Verdes (Greenways) route here, spanning a few kilometers along the old railway tracks.
The Mezquita Cathedral in Cordoba city is an absolute must-visit. And while you're there, wander through the narrow streets of the Jewish Quarter and relax at a cozy terrace somewhere. Castle enthusiasts will enjoy Castillo Almodovar del Rio, rumored to have been a filming location for Game of Thrones. Nearby, there's a large reservoir that's also worth visiting. The Sierra Morena Natural Park boasts stunning scenery, including several beautiful waterfalls.
A largely unspoiled province in Andalusia, Jaen is famous for its olive groves and many cities with magnificent buildings such as Baeza, Ubeda, and Alcalá. Here, you'll marvel at the numerous Renaissance palaces and buildings. If you're looking to buy real, organic olive oil, a visit to Finca el Trueno in Arbuniel is highly recommended. But really, the best way to explore is to drive through the Sierra Sur. Stop, for instance, at the observation platform Puerto de Locubín and take in the breathtaking views of the mountains, perhaps still capped with snow in the distance.
